The flowering of most plants is seasonal, mainly because plants can sense changes in the external environment, including factors such as photoperiod and temperature. Flowering LOCUS T (FT) gene is one of the key genes regulating flowering in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. It is transcribed and expressed in the companion cells of leaves, and then the protein is transported from phloem for a long distance to the apical meristem, forming a complex with a series of protein factors to induce flowering. This article reviews the research progress on the regulation of FT gene expression at the transcriptional and protein levels, and explores the effects of photoperiod and temperature on FT gene expression.
