Subtle Influence: How the Entrepreneurial Efforts of Community Peers Inspire Entrepreneurial Passion
如何激发创业者激情一直以来是学界和实务界关注的重点。本文结合观察学习理论的相关观点,通过两项纵向配对分析,试图明晰同伴创业努力引发创业者后续创业激情的传导机制和边界条件。两项研究结果表明,(1)同伴创业努力无法直接激发创业者后续的创业激情,而需要通过增强创业者的角色清晰间接影响创业者后续的创业激情。(2)同伴的创业进展会正向调节社群同伴前期的创业努力与创业者角色清晰之间的关系(3)创业者的主动性人格会负向调节创业者的角色清晰与创业者后期的创业激情之间的关系。加深了现有文献对创业激情传染的理解,为创业激情的传染能够超越组织结构的范畴,通过不同的人际互动关系进行提供了实证支持。
Entrepreneurial passion is crucial for driving entrepreneurial activities and sustaining entrepreneurial vitality. The question of how to stimulate this passion has garnered increasing attention. While earlier studies have explored the contagion of entrepreneurial passion, there are still two notable gaps in the current literature. First, although many scholars have examined the contagion mechanism of work passion, research on the contagion and aggregation of entrepreneurial passion remains in its infancy. Second, most studies on entrepreneurial passion contagion have focused on the team level, limiting our understanding of how this passion spreads among individuals. To address these gaps, this study proposes conducting two longitudinal dyad analyses, drawing on relevant concepts from observational learning theory. By examining the interactions between entrepreneurs and their peers within their communities, the study aims to analyze how entrepreneurial passion is induced and the underlying mechanisms involved. Study 1 invited 235 novice entrepreneurs from entrepreneurship training programs in Beijing, Tianjin, Shandong and Jiangsu provinces. to participate in a survey. The survey consisted of six rounds of follow-up questionnaires, each conducted at six-week intervals. The questionnaire adopts a round-robin design, which is mainly used to describe the interpersonal interaction in the workplace. Each participant was assigned a unique identification code to match the data between the entrepreneur and their entrepreneurial peer. Ultimately, 208 valid dyadic datasets were obtained. Building on the findings of Study 1, Study 2 explored the boundary role of peer entrepreneurship progress and entrepreneurial proactive personality. For the study, 336 novice entrepreneurs and their peer resources from entrepreneurship training programs in Guangdong, Hubei, Zhejiang, and Hunan provinces were invited to participate. The process was similar to Study 1, with six rounds of follow-up surveys conducted at six-week intervals, resulting in 297 valid dyadic datasets. The results suggest that (1) Peer entrepreneurial effort cannot directly stimulate entrepreneurs entrepreneurial passion, but indirectly influences it by enhancing role clarity. (2) Peer entrepreneurial progress positively moderates the relationship between peer entrepreneurial effort and entrepreneurial role clarity. (3) The personality trait of proactive negatively moderates the relationship between entrepreneurs role clarity and their entrepreneurial passion. Our study contributes to the literature on entrepreneurial passion in three key ways. First, it explores the formation mechanism of entrepreneurial passion from the novel perspective of entrepreneurial community peer interactions, broadening the focus beyond traditional entrepreneur-employee or team entrepreneur leader-team member dynamics. This approach deepens our understanding of entrepreneurial interactions. Second, the study details how community peers influence entrepreneurs through interpersonal interactions, highlighting the mediating role of role clarity in the dynamic relationship between peer entrepreneurial efforts and entrepreneurial passion. Third, it reveals that the entrepreneurial progress of peers can help entrepreneurs assess whether their efforts are worth emulating, thus indirectly supporting concepts from observational learning theory. Additionally, it finds that the personality trait of proactive can dampen the positive impact of peer entrepreneurial efforts on entrepreneurial passion by influencing role clarity. Future research should consider the significant role of various personality traits in shaping entrepreneurial passion when examining how to activate it.
