Research on Factors Influencing User Experience in Cultural Heritage Digital Storytelling Projects: The Dual Impact of Gamified Storytelling and Cognitive Styles
With the rapid iteration of digital technology driving cultural heritage digital storytelling, gamified interaction, as a typical technology-enabled means, has been widely applied. How to seek a dynamic balance between technology empowerment and user cognition has become a core concern in enhancing the user experience of cultural heritage digital storytelling projects. This study introduces cognitive style theory and adopts an experimental method, selecting the "Digital Dunhuang" project and the Yungang Grottoes digitalization project as experimental materials for gamified/non-gamified storytelling respectively. Using eye-tracking technology and questionnaire surveys to collaboratively obtain multimodal data of research variables, the study explores the differential impact of gamified/non-gamified storytelling on user experience under the moderation of cognitive style (field-dependent/field-independent). The findings show that, in terms of direct effects, compared to non-gamified storytelling, gamified storytelling significantly enhances users' sense of enjoyment in learning and perceived effectiveness, but significantly reduces users' perceived efficiency. In terms of moderating effects, cognitive style significantly moderates the impact of gamified/non-gamified storytelling on the sense of enjoyment in learning, perceived effectiveness, and perceived ease of learning, but its moderating effect on user immersion and perceived efficiency is not significant. Based on these findings, this study proposes suggestions from three aspects to optimize cultural heritage digital storytelling projects, which can provide reference for the adaptive design and user experience optimization of cultural heritage storytelling projects.
