Constructing Independent Discourse Power and Narrative System for China’s Cultural and Tourism Research: Concept Provision, Theoretical Innovation and Application Transformation Driven by Local Practices
[Abstract] For a long time, domestic cultural and tourism research has been constrained by transplanted theoretical paradigms and interpretive frameworks dependent on Western academic systems, giving rise to a structural contradiction characterized by “abundant local practices paired with insufficient supply of independent discourses”. This impedes the development of an independent knowledge system in cultural and tourism studies and weakens the theoretical foundation for telling Chinese cultural and tourism stories well. In the context of digital cultural tourism, tourists are no longer merely conventional consumers. Their behaviors including information searching, on-site experiences, UGC creation and social sharing continuously generate derivative value. Such value has become a critical factor shaping potential tourists’ decisions and driving the iterative upgrading of destinations. Grounded in China’s local cultural and tourism practices, this paper explores approaches to constructing independent discourse power and a narrative system for cultural and tourism research. Centered on three core links — conceptual provision, theoretical innovation and application transformation — it puts forward the core concept of “tourist product” and develops the theory of tourist product value (tourist derivative value). Attempting to break free from the path dependence on Western theories such as experience economy and value co-creation, this research follows the academic orientation of “we define concepts, we develop theories, and we guide applications”, and provides an original theoretical framework for building independent discourse power and a localized narrative system for China’s cultural and tourism research.
