Abstract
Neuroticism is an important personality vulnerability factor in marital relationships. Previous research has consistently shown that neuroticism is negatively associated with marital quality. However, most studies have focused on individual-level or cross-sectional associations, leaving insufficient understanding of how neuroticism influences marital quality through couples adaptive processes and how interdependence between spouses operates in this pathway. The newlywed period is a critical stage for the formation and adjustment of marital relationships, during which partner support may serve as an important mechanism linking personality vulnerability to later marital quality. Based on the Vulnerability-Stress-Adaptation (VSA) model, the present study examined the longitudinal mediating role of partner support in the association between neuroticism and marital quality among newlywed couples. To capture both individual-level interdependence and dyadic-level shared processes, we integrated the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) and the cross-level Common Fate Model (CFM).The study utilized a three-wave, longitudinal design with one-year intervals. Participants were 203 heterosexual newlywed couples from Beijing, China. At Time 1, both partners completed a measure of neuroticism (the Neuroticism subscale of the NEO-FFI). At Time 2 (one year later), they reported on the perceived partner support (the Support in Intimate Relationships Rating Scale). At Time 3 (another year later), marital quality was assessed (the Quality of Marriage Index). Data were analyzed using APIM to examine individual level and Cross-Level CFM to examine dyadic level, with spousal support tested as a mediator in the relationship between neuroticism and marital quality. The APIM mediation analysis revealed significant actor effects: wives and husbands own neuroticism at T1 negatively predicted their own marital quality at T3. Furthermore, wives neuroticism at T1 negatively predicted their husbands support at T2 ( = 0.14, p = 0.031), which in turn predicted their own marital quality at T3 (= 0.18, p = 0.027); the indirect effect was significant ( =0.0395%CI [0.070.00(3)]). Neither the direct nor the indirect partner effects were significant in the APIM. The total partner effect of wives' neuroticism on husbands' marital quality was significant ( = 0.12, 95% CI [0.26, 0.01]), but neither support pathway mediated it. The CFM results showed that the wives' neuroticism level at T1 negatively predicted the dyadic-level spousal support at T2 ( =0.32, p= 0.032). Dyadic-level spousal support, in turn, strongly predicted dyadic-level marital quality at T3 ( = 0.95, p = 0.009). The cross-level common fate mediation effect for wives was significant ( =0.3095%CI [0.980.03]), indicating that her neuroticism impaired the couple's shared sense of support and overall marital quality. No significant direct or indirect effects were found for husbands' neuroticism at the dyadic level. This study provided a nuanced, multi-level understanding of how neuroticism erodes marital quality through the mechanism of spousal support. Theoretically, it advanced the VSA model by elucidating a key mediating pathway and highlighting the critical distinction between individual perceptions and shared dyadic reality. These findings highlight the importance of perceived partner support in linking wives neuroticism to marital quality at the dyadic level. Practically, the results suggest that interventions aimed at improving marital quality should focus not only on reducing negative interactions but also on actively fostering and maintaining a high-quality, shared supportive environment.关键词
