Oxygen utility and hydrogen-ion production/consumption are the external responses to enzymatic biochemical transformation of pollutants in wastewater. Measurements of oxygen uptake rate (OUR) and hydrogen-ion production/consumption rate (HPR) provide novel approaches to investigate many aspects of biological wastewater treatment, including mechanism understanding, wastewater characterization and dynamic activated sludge process monitoring. In this paper, the principle of an integrated respirometric-titrimetric system developed in our group is presented. Its application to wastewater COD characterization and short-cut nitrification monitoring is described. The advantages of the integrated respirometric-titrimetric system are reviewed, and some key issues to be studied further are discussed.
