he AZ91 magnesium alloy with a thickness of 6 mm was subjected to one pass and two passes friction stir processing (FSP) by different stir tools. Microstructures and mechanical properties of the FSPed alloy were investigated by OM, SEM, microhardness measurement and tensile test. The results show that FSP can significantly refine the microstructure and fine-grained alloy can be prepared. Compared with one pass FSP, microstructures of the two passes FSP alloy can be refined slightly and distributed more uniformly. After FSP, the mechanical properties can be remarkably increased owing to fine and uniform microstructures. Two passes FSP can slightly improve the mechanical properties compared with one pass FSP.
