Only 22 years have elapsed since the petroleum reservoir characterization and stochastic modeling were raised, but their rapid development caused world attention and their impact on petroleum exploration, particularly on the development of oil field increased steadily. The paper briefly stated the relationship between petroleum reservoir characterization and its relative disciplines and the main development procedures from its forming background, the developing demand of petroleum industry, the professional formation and development, the interactions of disciplines and multi application of technologies by using the views of historical materialism. The paper major focuses on the discussions on its current development and the existed issues, elaborates the major role of petroleum exploration and development, the current challenges at home and abroad, and the problems should be regarded based on different research directions in the subject, and puts forward some views and suggestions.
