In recent years, frequent outbreaks of red tide due to eutrophication have caused widespread concern in the world. The marine microalgae Alexandrium tamarense is an important member during the formation of red tide, which can produce paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins. A. tamarense can adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions. PSP toxins produced by A. tamarense can be accumulated through the food chain in aquatic organisms, resulting in the poisoning of aquatic animals and humans. Therefore, studies on A. tamarense would contribute to a better knowledge of the control of A. tamarense and PSP toxins. This paper describes the distribution, growth characteristics, reasons for the formation of A. Tamarense, extraction and detection of PSP toxins as well as existing control methods about A. tamarense.
