Exploration into the relationship between large sites conservation planning and climate - A case study of the Great Wall of Ming Dynasty Qinghai Datong section

he Great Wall of Ming Dynasty is the most ambitious and complete military defense works in Chinese history. Taking the situation of Datong section of the Great Wall of Ming Dynasty in Qinghai Province as an example, this paper affords a brief illustration of the concepts of large sites and the philosophy of its conservation planning. Specifically speaking, the paper selects the best preserved section of the Great Wall of Ming Dynasty-Datong section as the conservation planning study area. With climate factors as the breakthrough point, the paper conducts a research into the impact of the rainfall, evaporation, temperature and wind speed on the incubation and evolution of disease in the earthen sites of Northwestern semi-arid region. Based on the results of an on-site survey, interior design and ARCGIS aerial photographic interpretation, this paper will analyze the problems in this conversation planning and suggest building a relic park in the study area, which may offer some reference for conservation planning work of the Great Wall of Ming Dynasty in the northwest region of China.
