In this paper the effects of chronic low-dose exposure to microcystins were studied on male mice reproduction. Male mice were treated with microcystin-LR (MC-LR) orally at 0, 1, 3.2, and 10μg/L for 3 and 6 months. Our results showed that in three-month group, sperm quality decreased at 3.2 and 10μg/L doses, testosterone declined at 10μg/L, LH and FSH had a slight increased, and apoptosis was observed in Leydig cells. The similar but more promouced results were observed in six-month group. Compared to control (0 μg/L), testosterone levels dropped at 3.2 and 10μg/L and the rate of sperm abnormality was higher in these two doses of MC-LR. Also, the structural damage to the testis was observed in 10μg/L dose. Thus, chronic low-dose exposure to MC-LR results in toxicity to male reproduction, causing declines in sperm quality, decreased levels of serum testosterone, and damage to the testis.
