We investigate the role of spatial and temporal complexity on the biomass of diffusive Gause-Lotka-Volterra systems. We find that the average total biomass is insensitive to the temporal complexity. On the other hand increasing diffusion leads to a decrease of the biomass as the spatial complexity plays an important role. At large values of the diffusion the spatial complexity saturates. We understand this region by a scaling analysis of the evolution equations. We propose that investigating the periodic windows that are typically interspersed in chaotic parameter regions is a useful test of the importance of temporal complexities.
