5-Membered carbo-/heterocyclic rings (e.g. cyclopentane, tetrahydrofuran and tetrahydropyrrole) broadly exist in natural products, and their novel and efficient construction have attacted great attentions from synthetic chemists. Cyclopropane 1,1-diesters can be easily prepared and can be used for construction of 5-membered carbo-/heterocyclic rings via [3+2] cycloadditions with C=C, C=O and C=N under catalysis of Lewis acids. In this paper,we review the intermolecular [3+2] cycloadditions of cyclopropane 1,1-diesters, and their applications in total synthesis of natural products.
