车牌定位算法是车牌自动识别系统的关键技术。本文通过分析车牌特点,提出了基于窗口搜索的车牌定位算法。算法分为粗定位和细定位两个过程。粗定位过程利用了车牌区域垂直方向的点密集分布的特性,基于垂直方向跳变点图统计固定大小窗口内的特征点密度值,以此来确定初步的车牌候选区域。细定位过程利用了车牌字符具有较丰富的垂直边缘,且垂直边缘的分布大致均匀的特性,通过拟合直线来分析垂直边缘并精确定位车牌候选区域的边界。实验表明该算法的实时性、鲁棒性和正确率都达到了实用技术指标。

License plate location is the key component of automatic vehicle license recognition system. A license plate locating algorithm based on window searching, including tow steps: primary location and precise location, was proposed in this paper. Primary location process utilized the denseness of pixels whose direction is vertical to locate the plate. The density of feature pixels in a fixed size window was calculated to find the primary candidate regions. Precise location process utilized the richness of the vertical edges of the characters on license plate. We can precisely locate the boundary of license plate using lines tracking. The results show that this algorithm can locate the plate precisely and quickly.
