his paper summerized the definition of allelopathy, the category, function and mechanisms of allelochemicals in red tide succession, as well as the allelopathic growth inhibition of phytoplankton by different aquatic plants, microalgae and microbes. Considering that allelopathy is one of the mechanisms thought to control red tides, the author emphazied that future research should mainly focus on the isolation and identification of new allelochemicals and the mechanisms of the allelopathy and the intensive study on allelopathy would provide new red tide control methods.
