Miniature inverted repeat transposable elements (MITEs) are special transposable elements, which belong to DNA transposon. They are similarly with DNA transposon in structural, but hold the high copy number characteristic of retrotransposon. MITEs are associated with genes, and may play an important role in gene regulation. In this study, a novel family of transposable elements has been identified in the apple genome. The three MITE elements share all the classic features of miniature inverted-repeat transposable elements (MITEs), including small size (419 bp), no coding potential, A/T richness, insertion bias toward non-coding regions, terminal inverted repeats (TIRs), target site duplications, and potential for forming secondary structures.
