Field test about wheel/rail dynamic interaction and rail profile were carried on before and after the application of top-of rail friction modifier on the rail of sharp curve of heavy-haul railway. The effect of top-of-rail friction modifier on wheel/rail interaction was analyzed by comparing the wheel/rail dynamic force, train running safety and rail wear. Test results indicated the top-of-rail friction modifier would not affect wheel/rail vertical fore and the train running speed. It would reduce wheel/rail lateral force, their distribution range and derailment coefficient. The average value of wheel/rail lateral force and derailment coefficient reduced about 25% and above 25% respectively. It would reduce the growth rate of rail vertical wear which reduced 14%~35%. Water between wheel and rail could work as the lubricant but its work is limited for about 2%~4% reduction of wheel/rail lateral force after the top-of-rail friction modifier was fully covered on the top of rail. The top-of-rail friction modifier could reduce the lateral force effectively.
