Bittacidae, a cosmopolitan family in Mecoptera, are important ecological indicators of environment. Their larvae have a pair of compound eyes and a median ocellus on the head, a unique character in Holometabola, indicating an important positon in the phylogeny of Insecta and a significant linkiage between Hemimetabola and Holometabola. The family currently comprises 204 extant species in 18 genera in the world, and 31 species in three genera in the Chinese fauna. Taxonomic characters of Bittacidae are introduced, and the generic taxonomy is summarized. A key to genera of Bittacidae is complied.
