o get crack's location and geometry form information on the plate component surface and subsurface, a method which combined the the surface acoustic wave(SAW) detection technology and elliptic positioning principle together is proposed. Based on the foundation of the surface wave propagation rules in the plate, the defect detection principle of SAW and the elliptic localization algorithm, the the defect location and geometry form can be detected accurately by extracting the defect feature parameters precisely and overlying the elliptical imaging. The artificial defect detection experiments on a plate show that the detection method can accurately distinguish the width and position of the defects, at the same time the direction of the defect can be distinguished accurately.
