In this paper, based on continuous-wave Pr:YLF visible laser operation at 640 nm, Q-switched laser operation has been achieved using a novel CdTe/CdS quantum dots as saturable absorber, for the first time to our knowledge. The maximum average output power, the narrowest pulse widths, maximum pulse energies and pulse peak powers have reached 48.3mW, 263 ns, 0.19 μJ and 0.71 W, respectively. This work, exhibiting the best laser performance up to now based on nano-material saturable absorber in visible spectral region, reveals that CdTe/CdS is also a promising saturable absorber for visible solid-state lasers.
