Planetary roller screw mechanism (PRSM) is a mechanical transmission device for converting rotary motion into linear motion by the meshing of thread surfaces of a few rollers contacting with the screw and nut. The axial clearances between the thread surfaces of the roller, screw and nut have significant impact on the performance of the mechanism. In this paper, the equations of the roller, screw and nut thread surfaces are established based on the structural characteristics of the PRSM. According to optimization theory, a method to calculate the axial clearances in the PRSM is proposed. The results show that the clearance between the screw and roller is smaller than that between the nut and roller when the thread thicknesses of the roller, screw and nut are identical.
