36-element hexagonal focused array operating at 433MHz for microwave hyperthermia have been designed by optimizing the power transmission efficiency of the system consisting of a transmitting hexagonal array, a testing (receiving) antenna, and an equivalent phantom representative of human body. A dipole antenna is utilized as the receiving antenna,which is placed in the near-field target zone. The optimal excitations of the arrays are obtained by optimizing the power transmission efficiency of the whole system. Simulation and experimental results agree very well. The fabricated array focuses at the point exactly as simulated and does not induce hot spots in adjacent tissues, demonstrating a good focusing capability.
