Effects of vitamin C on the response of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) under transport stress

his study investigated effects of vitamin C added to the water in common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) under transport stress. The study set up a control group, model group and Vc alleviation groups. After 5 h transportation, plasma and liver samples of fish in the model and Vc alleviation groups were used for determination of hematological parameter, vitamin C and antioxidant-related parameters. In the model group, plasma cortisol and glucose concentrations were significantly increased compared to the control group(P﹤0.05). While, plasma cortisol and glucose concentrations of alleviation group were significantly lower than in the model group(P﹤0.05), and no significant differences were found between alleviation and control group(P﹥0.05). The activities of liver superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the model group were significantly decreased compared to the control and alleviation groups(P﹤0.05), and activities of liver SOD in alleviation group were also significantly higher than in the control group(P﹤0.05). The levels of liver malondialdehyde (MDA) were significantly increased in the model group(P﹤0.05), and no significant differences were found between alleviation and control group(P﹥0.05). Plasma vitamin C concentrations in the alleviation group were significantly increased compared to the control and model group(P﹤0.05). Above all, transport stress could cause an adverse effect on the body health in common carp, and vitamin C added to the water may play key roles in the alleviation of transport stress.
