船舶的总布置设计是把众多的分系统、装备按其性能要求综合布置到船舶空间的一项工作。由于各系统、装备均要占据有限的船舶空间，势必限制各系统性能的完全发挥。总布置设计本身是一个非常复杂的过程，涉及到很多方面，需要综合考虑多方面要求。随着造船技术的发展，人们对船舶总布置设计的要求越来越高，如何快速高效的生成一个能够在设计阶段进行实时交互的船舶总布置三维模型，使设计者可以更直观形象的对船舶总布置进行修改和调整成为一个亟待解决的问题。
