Electrically small antennas are a critical enabling technology for a variety of wireless applications.Recently some metamaterial-based amd metamaterial-inspired electrically small antennas are presented.These antennas are shown to be naturally matched to a 50 source,i.e.,without the introduction of a matching network.It is verified that these antennas significantly improve the radiation resistance.As a result,these antennas are efficient,easy to build and inexpensive.This paper explains the reason why these electrically small antennas can match the feed source,realize self-resonance and analyzes the principle of improving radiation resistance in detail.This paper also summarizes the development of metamaterial-based and metamaterial-inspired electrically small antenna,a novel efficient electrically small antenna is presented. The design details and radiation characteristics of the antenna system at 2.7Ghz are reported.It is demonstrated that this novel electrically small antenna has extremely high radiation efficiency by simulation.
