Stabilization of Airborne Gamma-Ray Spectra From NaI(Tl) Detector

NaI(Tl) detectors are always used in Airborne Gamma-Ray Spectrometry. They have the advantages of being efficient for high-energy gamma rays and can be used without cooling. Due to both NaI(Tl) scintillator and photomultiplier tube being sensitive to temperature, spectral drift will occur responding to ambient temperature. An approach is presented to stabilize the NaI(Tl) spectral drift by covering thermal-protective coating on the surface of NaI(Tl) detectors to keep the ambient temperature constantly as far as possible, and by adjusting gain to stabilize the spectra in every incremental time. A new peak-seeking algorithm and a fast convergent algorithm for adjusting gain to stabilize spectra are set forth in the paper. Spectral drifting channels are less than 0.6 in 4 hours, and the quality of NaI(Tl) spectra is improved much, when this approach is used.
