Body in white (BIW) design to match the powertrain system is a key issue in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) development process. This paper presents a mathematical model for topology optimization of BIW in HEVs based on Solid Isotropic Microstructure with Penalization (SIMP) method. The design objective is to minimize the structural compliance of BIW with both volumetric and geometric constraints. Design sensitivity analysis of BIW structural compliance is presented and the filtration technique of sensitivity is applied in solving the numerical instability problems that may arise during the optimization process. Numerical examples of topology optimization of a parallel HEV BIW are given to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the proposed approach. The proposed model and algorithm can be used in HEV BIW concept design, providing basis for detailed design of the body structure.
