Since the discovery of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) by Wang\'s team in 2012, breakthroughs have been made in this field, not only showing significant advantages in the demonstration of self-powered systems, but also deepening the understanding of the fundamental mechanism of TENGs. TENGs show great potential in for self-powering and energy harvesting, especially their perfect integration with electrochemical processes, realizing self-powered electrochemical processes without the need for external power sources. This paper reviews the latest research on TENGs for high-performance energy conversion and self-powered electrochemical systems, with a special focus on applications in water decomposition, air pollution purification, and corrosion prevention. This concept of electrochemical operation free from the constraints of an external power source provides new ideas for large-scale applications in environmental science.
