Genotypic and Environmental Variation of Edible Fiber and Protein Content in Barley Grains

he difference among 7 locations and 6 barley cultivars in edible fiber and protein contents was investigated. The results showed that the edible fiber content among 6 barley cultivars ranged from 24.8% for 04-9 to 26.3% for 05-20, and among 7 locations ranged from 24.9% in Pinghu to 26.7% in Jiaran. While the grain protein content among the cultivars ranged from 8.64% for 04-9 to 9.15% for 06-19, and among the locations ranged from 7.63% in Hangzhou to 9.68% in Jiaran. The ANOVA showed that the effect of location, cultivar and their interaction on edible fiber content were highly significant. The effect of location on protein content was highly significant, and cultivar effect and the interaction of location and cultivar were significant. The environmental variation was larger than genotypic one for both edible fiber and protein. The correlation analysis showed that edible fiber content was significantly and positively correlated with protein content, indicating it is possible to improve edible fiber and protein content simultaneousl
