his paper is concerned with the fretting problem of a functionally graded coated half-space indented by a rigid sphere under a normal load and a cyclic torque. The shear modulus of the graded coating is assumed to be an exponential function and the Poisson’s ratio is constant. By using Hankel integral transform technique, the contact problem is reduced to a Cauchy singular integral equation. The contact pressures are calculated by solving the equations numerically. The results show that the stick region and angel of rigid rotation depend on the gradient of the functionally graded coating as well as the torque couple. The results also show that the appropriate gradual variation of the shear modulus can significantly alter the contact traction. This may modify the contact damage.
