Enrichment and Community Characteristics of Acetate-Utilizing Sulfate Reducing Microflora

o enrich the acetate-utilizing sulfate reducing bacteria (ASRB) and reveal the characteristics of their communities, the substrate acclimation was performed on sulfate reducing microorganism in anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) by substituting influent acetate for lactate step by step, during which denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) was used to monitor the structure and shifting of community. The result showed that the microbial community structure demonstrated a short response to the substrate substitution, but soon returned to its original state. This microbial community has presented the function of able to oxidize acetic acid, but the dominant populations have not shacked greatly with the acetic acid feeding. The present study shows that the short-term transformation in environmental factors is difficult to change the stable microbial community structure, but the function of microbial community can vary with outside conditions.
