Synthesis of 2,5-Diphenylthiophene and its Photostability, Singlet Oxygen and Photoactivated Activities on Spodoptera litura Cell

Since photosensitizers have a short half-life period, these were not used in field applications. In order to improve photostability of photosensitizers, 2,5-diphenylthiophene was synthesized by replacing thiophene rings of α-Terthienyl (α-T) with benzene rings. According to the bioisoterism principle, insecticidal activities of 2,5-diphenylthiophene (which has higher photostability), should be equal to those of α-T so that it could be applied directly to the field. Synthetic routes of 2,5-diphenylthiophene and its singlet oxygen with UV, and its photoactivated activity on Spodoptera litura (SL)cells were investigated. Synthetic routes of 2,5-diphenylthiophene and its singlet oxygen with UV, and its photoactivated activity on Spodoptera litura (SL)cells were investigated. This indicates that synthetic routes of 2,5-diphenylthiophene was simple. Singlet oxygen of 2,5-diphenylthiophene was 1.0475 μg/mmol under UV. Degradation dynamic equation of 2,5-diphenylthiophene in methanol was Ct = 26.267e-0.0061t and half-life was 113.62 h. Cytotoxicity of photosensitizer 2,5-diphenylthiophene on SL cells were 0.22 and 0.16μg/mL after treatment for 24 and 48 h, respectively. Synthetic routes of 2,5-diphenylthiophene was feasible, had high singlet oxygen production ability, and high photoactivated cytotoxicity on SL cells under UV. Moreover, 2,5-diphenylthiophene had overcome the deficiency of photoactivated insecticides, which generally was not applied directly in the field because it degrades quickly in the environment.
