Gastric cancer is the most common tumor of digestive system, and Chinese medicine is of significance in the treatment of middle-advanced gastric cancer. This progress summarizes and analysis articles during recent eight years in four aspects. In respect of treatment based on syndrome differentiation, there are six major schools of views, namely gastric cancer due to coldness, blood stasis, phlegm, toxin, deficiency as well as treatment based on different stage and syndrome. In respect of therapy combining Chinese medicine and western medicine, obvious advantages exist in such aspects as relieving clinical symptoms, increasing effectiveness, reducing toxicity, curing surgical complication, preventing metastasis and recurrence and managing cancer pain. Another merit of traditional Chinese medicine is a comprehensive therapy of external use of Chinese herbs, acupuncture and psychological intervention. Still, there are certain problems to be solved in traditional Chinese medicine. Therefore, an improved treatment of gastric cancer could be achieved through combination and mutual-complement of Chinese medicine and western medicine.
