Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs) have high energy efficiency, green and non-polluting, low-temperature and fast-starting priorities, and have a broad development prospect in the future energy transition. Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the half-reaction of PEMFCs, is highly dependent on platinum-based metal nanoparticles as its core electrocatalyst. Although excellent ORR activity can be obtained by tuning the electronic structure on the surface of Pt-based metal catalysts, there are still problems of poor durability such as corrosion of carbon carriers, dissolution of active metal elements, and sintering agglomeration of nanoparticles. This review summarises recent advances on how to enhance the durability of Pt-based catalysts for ORR, and concludes by further suggesting remaining problems and future research directions in the development of Pt-based catalysts.
