In developmental researches, effortful control and executive function are two main frameworks for studying self-regulation. Recently, an integrated trend emerges in the studies of effortful control and executive function. Extracting common components is an approach to integrate effortful control and executive function. Executive attention is the common process underlying effortful control and executive function. However, there are still differences among executive attention, effortful control and executive function. Thus, it is necessary to clarify the relationship among these concepts. This article begins with an introduction in concepts, structures, measures and neural substrates of executive attention, effortful control and executive function. Moreover, this article reviewed commonalities and differences among executive attention, effortful control and executive function. Lastly, this article provides three recommendations on how to integrate executive attention, effortful control and executive function in future researcher from the angle of methodology.
