lmost all kinds of neurotransmitters exsited in brain are also discovered in the retina, including amino acids neurotransmitters (glutamate, γ-aminobutyric acid, aspartate, glycine and acetylcholine), monoamine neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin), peptide (cholecystokinin, enkephalin, glucagon, neurotensin, neuropeptide Y ), and neuromodulations (nitric oxide, retinoic acid, zinc ion). Glutamate,γ-aminobutyric acid, glycine, dopamine and serotonin are the major neurotransmitters in retina, which are important to the normal function of retina. Here, we would review the biosynthesis, metabolism, function and changes in pathological conditions of the major neurotransmitters in retina.
