Studies on Thermal and Damping Properties of Epoxy Modified Asphalts

he thermal and damping behaviors of both neat and epoxy modified asphalts (epoxy asphalts) were studied by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Furthermore, the morphology of epoxy asphalts was invistigated by laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM). DSC results showed that the enthalpy of cure reaction of epoxy asphalts for the bond coat and binder during non-isothermal and isothermal curing were 38.6 and 44.1 J/g and 122.0 and 93.8 J/g, respectively. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of neat asphalt and epoxy asphalts were -16.3℃, 14.3℃ and 10.2℃, which indicated that the addition of epoxy increased the Tg of asphalt. DMA results also showed that Tg of epoxy asphalts is greater than that of neat asphalt. Furthermore, the presence of epoxy increases the damping properties of asphalt. Epoxy asphalt had a higher damping factor, indicating epoxy asphalts could be applied to damping materials. The TGA/DTG data showed that the thermal degradation of neat asphalt is only a one stage process whereas a two or three stage process for epoxy asphalts. The addition of epoxy decreased the thermal stability of asphalt. The images of LSCM showed that epoxy was homogenously dispersed in the asphalts before curing, whereas phase separation appeared after curing. For cured epoxy asphalts, epoxy was the continous phase and asphalts were the dispersed phase.
