Biomarkers with high sensitivity and specificity have important clinical utility for early diagnosis, prognostication, and pharmacodynamics evaluation for Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Until now, most of the circulating HCC biomarkers used in clinical practice were protein molecules. However, these biomarkers often had low sensitivity and specificity. In the past decade, circulating cell-free nucleic acids (cfNAs) have been extensively studied. We review the studies that evaluated the role of cfNAs as circulating HCC biomarkers on the diagnostic and prognostic significance and discuss recent advances.
