he development characteristics and indicating significance of the ladder-like faults towards the sea in the Pearl River Mouth Basin

he Pearl River Mouth Basin is the rifting basin developed in Cenozoic in the northern continental margin of the South China sea, and rich in oil and gas resources, located in the ocean-continent transition zone between the South China block and the South China Sea block, and closely relates to the evolution of the South China sea. Geophysical data interpretation and predecessors' study results show that the Pearl River Mouth Basin develops faults of NE and NW trending since Cenozoic, which divided the basin into belts in the NS direction and blocks in the EW direction. The NE-trending faults are characteristic of obvious ladder-like development, which control the evolution and sedimentary-structural migration of the Pearl River Mouth Basin from north to south. Combined with the regional tectonic evolution background, the long-range and deep effects caused by subduction of the Pacific plate and the collision of Indian-Eurasian plate are the main dynamic mechanism of the ladder-like faults in the northern South China Sea, the magma activities, rifting and the ocean ridge transition are the continuous and ordered tectonic events in time and space, which relates to the upwelling and southward migration of deep mantle material.
