he spectroscopic properties of the freebase (H2THPP), monomeric diacid (m-H4THPP2+) and aggregated diacid (agg-H4THPP2+) of tetra(4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin have been studied with UV-Vis absorption, resonance light scattering (RLS), and resonance Raman (RR). The absorption bands of the aggregate were found exhibiting obvious shift and broadening, which is attributed to the excitonic coupling between porphyrin rings and structural inhomogeneous. Resonance Raman spectra of monomeric and aggregated tetra(4-hydroxyphenyl) porphyrin diacid excited near their B absorption bands were measured and analyzed. The observed Raman bands were assigned to local coordinates. Based on the spectral observations, the aggregation-induced structural changes of the porphyrin ring were analyzed. The intermolecular interactions of H4THPP2+ oligomers were studied with semi-empirical quantum-chemical calculations, and the Cl- anion mediated hydrogen bond was found to play an important role for the stabilization of the aggregates.
