Sour rain, also known as death in the skies, is currently one of the major environmental problems around the globe.Oxysulfide is an important reason to cause sour rain.A new method, based on the principle of piezoelectric quartz crystal, is put forth for the detection of oxysulfide in the atmosphere. It is prepared by coating cobalt phthalocyanine sensitive to oxysulfide on the surface of electrodes of piezoelectric quartz crystal by electrical activation and chemical coupling. It accomplishes the detection of oxysulfide by the absorption of oxysulfide which can change the oscillation frequency of the piezoelectric quartz crystal. The effect of temperature and interfering gases was studied to find the ability of the sensor to resist interferences. The experimental results show that the temperature does not impact the accuracy of the sensor and the output of the sensor has a good linear relationship with the concentration of oxysulfide at 0~2 milligram/cubic meter. The sensor can be reliably used to detect oxysulfide in the atmosphere with precision.
