ir trap is one of the important factors affecting the injection molded product’s quality. This paper presents a method to investigate the implications of part local dimensions and gate location on the number and locations of air traps. By ActiveX programming with the CAD system and MPI, the part local dimensions such as the positional dimensions of ribs were changed in the CAD system; the part geometry was then transferred to the MPI environment where the gate location was assigned; subsequently, the MPI flow analysis was executed, with the number and positions of air traps being retrieved from the analysis results. The whole procedure was carried out iteratively to traverse all of the specified local dimensions and gate locations. Consequently, the optimal local dimensions and gate location in terms of air traps can be determined, which also offers a designer a valuable decision-making support in injection molding design optimization。
