Efficient Network Coding Mechanism in Multi-hop Wireless Networks with Hidden Terminals

Network coding has been theoretically proved effective in improving throughput in multi-hop wireless networks. However, the application of network coding in real wireless network faces a series of technical challenges. In this paper, we investigate the impact of hidden terminals on the performance of network coding in multi-hop wireless networks. We first analyze the problems of hidden terminals in COPE-like network coding schemes. Based on the findings, we design a new network coding-aware MAC called Hidden Terminal Elimination in COPE (HTEC) as a solution. The main idea of HTEC is to avoid collisions by introducing new control signals and modifying the handshake process. We implement HTEC in NS-2 and evaluate the performance of HTEC through simulation experiments. The numerical results demonstrate that HTEC can significantly improve the decoding ratio and network throughput, at an acceptable cost of transmission delay.)
