his paper introduces a method to elicit the interconnectivity of key elements of complex projects by applying distance based techniques. By understanding the most highly connected nodes in a complex project, project managers can focus management resources and mitigate systemic issues. Using data from a study (SHRP 2) into 18 complex infrastructure projects in the USA，the team have uncovered，using the distance based method，a surprising and significant emphasis on scheduling as the most important complexity factor on these projects. The paper explains how the distance based method is applied to existing complex project study and why the result is so important to the rapidly growing field of complex project management. The team suggest possible reasons for the findings and how this approach could be applied to other projects and future research.
