his study used three cultivars under W0 (no irrigation during the whole growth period) and W2 (irrigation at jointing and anthesis stage, respectively) to clarify the effects of irrigation treatments and cultivars on root distribution and yield of winter wheat in 2020-2021. The three cultivars were: LX66, SJZ8 and KN199. The results showed that the root length density (RLD) in 0~200 cm soil layer and RWD in 40~200 cm soil layer under W0 was higher than that under W2. The root length density (RLD) and root weight density (RWD) of LX66 and SJZ8 were higher than KN199 in the 40~200 cm soil layer, but lower than KN199 in the 0~40 cm soil layer. The increase of RLD of LX66 promoted the water storage consumption of deep soil after anthesis under W0, and the water depletion of effects of irrigation treatments and cultivars on root distribution and yield of winter wheat LX66 was 42% higher than KN199 in 100~200 cm soil layer. There was no significant difference in wateEffects of irrigation treatments and cultivars on root distribution and yield of winter wheatr consumption in the whole growth stage, but there was large variation in water consumption in sowing to anthesis and anthesis to maturity among cultivars. The water consumption of LX66 was significantly lower than that of KN199 at sowing to anthesis, but significantly higher than that of KN199 at flowering to maturity under W0. The increase of water consumption after anthesis was beneficial to increase grain yield, and the yield of LX66 was 11.7% higher than KN199. Under W2 treatment, the water consumption of LX66 at anthesis to maturity was lower than KN199, but there was no significant difference in yield among cultivars. The results showed that the increase of RLD and RWD in deep soil layers could promote the absorb of water in deep soil layers after anthesis, and ultimately increase yield under dry conditions.
