元胞自动机是研究复杂系统常用的建模与仿真工具。目前元胞自动机的大多数应用都是基于串行体系结构的数字计算机实现的,这与元胞自动机内在并行性存在矛盾,从而极大地限制了仿真效率。为了提高元胞自动机模型的仿真效率,本文提出了一种基于SOPC(System On a Programmable Chip)的并行元胞自动机处理系统,并在FPGA(Field-Programmable Gate Array)开发板上对其进行了实现。通过对“生命游戏”模型的测试表明,相比软件实现方法,该系统的仿真效率有显著的提升。本文提出的并行元胞自动机处理系统结构相对简单,成本较低,可以针对不同应用实现相应的扩展。

ellular automata (CA) are useful tools in modeling and simulation of complex systems. Currently most applications of CA are implemented based on the sequential architecture of the digital computer, which is inconsistent with the inherent parallelism of cellular automata and greatly limits the efficiency of simulation. This paper proposes a parallel cellular automata processing system based on the architecture of the system on a programmable chip (SOPC), and implements it on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) development board. Experiments with the “Game of Life” by this system show significant improvement of computational efficiency in comparison with those of software implementation. The parallel cellular automata processing system is simple, low cost, and extensible for different applications.
