Spherical microphone array have been recently applied in sound recordings, beamforming, sound field reproduction and sound field analysis, as they have the advantage of spherical symmetry facilitating three-dimensional analysis. In contrast to existing beamforming techniques, this method takes the physics of wave propagation into account. The sound fields are decomposed using spherical harmonic as the basis functions by mounting a spherical array into a rigid sphere and an open sphere to investigate the beamforming techniques. Finally, a genetic algorithm is used to optimize the spherical microphone array to get optimal beam pattern.
